ABSTRACT
This study was undertaken to find out Enugu Residents Perception of New Media as a means of Communication. In this research work, some research questions were raised which included, if Enugu residents see media as a means of communication; what purpose do they use new media for; how credible is the new media and if new media is seen as an agent of social change. The study used the questionnaire to collect primary data, while secondary data was sourced from textbooks, journals, magazines, internet, etc. A sample of 400 people was drawn from residents of Enugu Metropolis and the emanating data was analyzed using simple percentages and charts. Three hypotheses were raised and tested with Chi-square analytical technique. The null hypotheses of all the three hypotheses raised were accepted while the alternate hypotheses were rejected. The empirical analysis indicates that Enugu residents perceive new media as a means of communication, but do not see it as a reliable source of information. Again, most residents see new media as an agent of social change, but with more negative change than positive change. Based on these findings, the researcher recommended a lot of measures, for adequate utilization of new media which include that government should ensure that accurate and reliable information are being disseminated in the new media backed up by frustrating hackers and fraudsters in internet usage.
